Read All About it!

Last year the two libraries in our county experienced more than 52,000 visits by people seeking services. Visitors borrowed almost 59,000 items at no charge, including 30,000 free DVDs. More than 27,500 visitors used the library computers and/or Wi-Fi, also at no charge.

It's not too late to buy your 2019 calendar at the library.  The Perry County Cultural Arts Commission has created a 2019 calendar showcasing the beauty of our county on each page. The calendars are available for just $5 and can be purchased at the Library in Linden or the Buffalo River Artisans Cooperative (BRAC) at 110 Main Street in Linden.

The Perry County Public Library in Linden is continuing to offer basic computer training classes funded under a Grant Contract by the State of Tennessee. Call the library at 931-589-5011 to register for the classes described below. Space is limited, call soon. Classes will be offered at the Library in Linden, 104 College Avenue, on the street behind the High School.

     The Perry County Public Library in Linden continues to offer basic computer training classes funded under a grant contract by the State of Tennessee.

      Classes are offered at the Library in Linden, 104 College Avenue, on the street behind the high school. Call the library at 931-589-5011 to register for the classes described below:

      -- Introduction to the Computer, Saturday, March 16, 2:30 p.m., a very basic class for beginners who are just getting started, prior knowledge of computers is not required.

       --Office Productivity, Monday, March 18, 4:30 p.m., for beginners who know a little about computers and want to be more productive in a home office.

       --Internet Searching, Saturday, March 23, 2:30 p.m., for beginners who know a little about computers and want to learn how to find important information on the internet.

       --Social Media, Monday, March 25, 4 p.m., for users with some computer skills who want to use Social Media such as Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter.

      Class size is limited, call to register in advance. Computers provided, or bring your laptop.

When Dale E. Long asked Library Director, Gail Spragins, if the library in Linden could use a cash donation from the Viet Nam Veterans of America Chapter 1123, she was delighted. Spragins explained that she wanted to purchase from the list of Top Ten Western Books. In particular, she hoped to find the books in Large Print format.

Books given to the Perry County Public Library by The Viet Nam Veterans of America, Chapter 1123According to Director Spragins, "Large print books cost nearly double the price of regular print books.  It's worth the extra cost because the library in Linden serves many people in the community who can read only large print. For example, Pulitzer Prize Finalist "The Son" by Phillip Meyer costs about $40 in large print format."

With the generous donation from the Viet Nam Vets, Spragins purchased three additional Top Ten Westerns in large print: "The Virginian" by Owen Wister, "Wyatt Earp" by Max Braun, and "Hondo" by Louis L'Amour. 

The 1968 bestseller "True Grit" by Charles Portis is no longer available in hardback for less than $100. And the book is not available in large print at any price. So, Spragins purchased a new, regular print, paperback copy for about $12. She also purchased a few other titles in regular print.

"We put the new books on the shelves last week, and they have already been checked out," said Spragins, "but the library has many other Westerns available in large and regular print. We are grateful to the local Viet Nam Veterans for supporting our local library."
